By Bart Barry They were trying too hard, weren’t they? Victor Ortiz was handsome enough, not gorgeous. He was well-spoken, not eloquent. He was a standout amateur, not an Olympic gold medalist. He was a good project, not a finished product. Yet Golden Boy Promotions’ frenzied search for its next Golden Boy made him The One. The HBO/GBP co-promotional machine was cranked up. Features were done. Camera crews visited hometowns. The future of boxing would fill Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. “Boxing After Dark” would be Ortiz’s stage while “World Championship Boxing” impatiently waited. And Argentinean Marcos Maidana would be the victim. Except that he wouldn’t be. Maidana would not relent or say his scripted lines and exit stage left. He was the only variable in the whole production, and he ruined the whole production. He also turned Ortiz into the latest reminder that, for all its enthusiasm, Golden Boy Promotions still does not spot or develop talent as well as it does everything else. Maidana brought the Ortiz bandwagon to a grinding halt Saturday by rising from the mat thrice and making Ortiz want to be anywhere but in a boxing ring with him. [...]

By Matt Yanofsky (ringside) With a vocally supportive crowd behind him at the Baker Theater, Contender Season 2 Alum “Furious” Freddie Curiel improved his professional ledger to 19-8-2 (8 KO’s) following a gutsy unanimous decision victory over Columbian banger Francisco Osorio 12-6-1 (10). The opening round began tentatively, where there was little to note outside of a few Curiel body shots towards the tail end. Curiel and Osario began to trade in close during the second and third, as neither man had plans to put in much work from the outside and Curiel landing the better blows. Curiel was cut on the bridge of his nose – which was dinged up prior to the bout from a sparring session – and was temporarily stunned by some big shots by Osario in the fourth. A refocused Curiel got back on his game for the rest of the contest, outworking his opponent with a plethora of shots to the body and the head while effectively dealing with trickles of blood from his nose. The game Osorio battled valiantly fought dirty at times and was docked a point for holding in the sixth. Scores were 80-71, 77-74 and 78-73. With [...]
